The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) extends its deepest condolences to the family of Amshen Joan Phillip, the snpink’tn Indian Band, the syilx Okanagan Nation, and all those whose communities and lives were strengthened by her leadership.

Joan's death is a profound loss for communities throughout the South Okanagan and across British Columbia. A member of the snpink’tn Indian Band, Amshen Joan Phillip served as the MLA for Vancouver-Strathcona from 2023 to 2026 and was widely recognized for her advocacy on behalf of Indigenous Peoples and future generations. Her dedication earned respect across the province and inspired others to build stronger, more inclusive communities.

"Joan Phillip brought wisdom, courage, and purpose to every conversation and decision she helped shape," said RDOS Board Chair Mark Pendergraft. "She challenged people to listen, learn, and work together to create positive change. Joan was deeply committed to her community and her people, serving as a role model who advanced understanding and strengthened relationships throughout our region. She will be greatly missed."

The RDOS Board of Directors honours Amshen Joan Phillip's contributions to public life and her commitment to Indigenous rights, culture, community well-being, and reconciliation. The Board extends its sincere sympathies to Grand Chief Stewart Phillip and family, the snpink’tn Indian Band, and the syilx Okanagan Nation, recognizing her lasting impact and legacy.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at Outma School.
