Road clearing and rural curbside collection during snowfall events

News Article

INFORMATION RELEASE

During snowfall events in the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS), AIM Roads is contracted under the Province of British Columbia to provide snow removal services. Highways and emergency routes are cleared first, followed by bus routes, and then arterial and secondary roads.

If collection trucks cannot safely access areas that have not been plowed or sanded, curbside collection may be postponed. Waste Connections of Canada delivers the RDOS curbside collection program, servicing most rural residences in Electoral Areas “A”, “B”, “C”, “D”, “E”, “F”, “G”, “I” and the Village of Keremeos. The program includes weekly garbage collection, biweekly recycling, seasonal yard waste pickup, and annual large-item collection.

If your collection is missed by 5:00 pm due to poor road conditions, contact Waste Connections of Canada at 250-490-3888 or email CSR-Penticton-Osoyoos@wasteconnections.com to confirm the rescheduled pick-up. If collection is scheduled for the next day, do not leave carts at the curb overnight. During snowfall events, collection may be deferred to the next regularly scheduled pick-up day.

Residents are reminded:

  • Do not place carts on or behind snowbanks.
  • Clear a space on your property for carts; residents are responsible for maintaining an accessible area.
  • Keep carts off the travelled portion of the roadway to avoid interfering with snowplows.
  • Remove snow and ice from carts to ensure lids open when tipped into the truck.
  • Maintain one (1) metre of clearance on all sides of the cart from vehicles, fences, mailboxes, or snowbanks, and three (3) metres of overhead clearance.
  • All material must fit inside the cart with the lid closed; extra materials will not be collected.
    • For additional garbage, purchase tag-a-bag stickers ($2.50 each) for extra bags.
    • Visit rdos.bc.ca for details on cart change-outs, options, and associated costs.

If you live within the Regional District, contact AIM Roads to report issues or concerns related to snow removal at 1-866-222-4204 or email aimcommunications.ca@acciona.ca.
