The Regional District's mosquito control program has been in place since 1974. From March to September each year, between 300 and 350 properties are checked for mosquitoes in Areas A, B, C, D, F, G, and H as well as Osoyoos, Oliver, Penticton, and Summerland.
Regional District technicians check stagnant (still) water bodies for mosquito larvae as well as for the predators that eat the larvae. Once each larval/predator is complete, larviciding sprays are applied where required.
In accordance with B.C. Ministry of Environment habitat guidelines, the RDOS uses Vectobac 200G, a 'non-toxic', 'organic' pesticide. Because each rainfall can lead to a new hatch of mosquitoes within a week, District staff try to check all properties that will likely produce mosquitoes each week.
The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen has worked to implement integrated pest management (IPM) principles, and has developed appropriate principles and policies. For more information, please click on the links below.
