New transit shelter coming to Hedley

News Article

INFORMATION RELEASE

Residents of Hedley and those travelling through the community will soon have a safer and more comfortable place to wait for transit service as the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) moves forward with the installation of a new transit shelter supporting the BC Transit Route 50 service between Princeton and Penticton.

The project is funded entirely through the Province of British Columbia’s Transit Minor Betterments Program. Since 2019, the RDOS has pursued funding opportunities for a transit shelter in Hedley in response to an identified community need. Through continued advocacy and a successful RDOS application, $90,000 in provincial funding was secured to move the project forward. The program is application-based, and the RDOS application was approved based on safety, ridership and accessibility goals.

The new shelter will be installed at the corner of Scott Avenue and Irene Street (West) in Hedley and will provide a year-round dedicated, sheltered waiting area for transit users with associated site improvements. Construction is scheduled to begin this week and is expected to be completed by December 2026, subject to weather and construction schedules.

“This investment in Hedley reflects years of effort and advocacy to advance a project that matters to the community,” said Electoral Area “G” Director Tim Roberts. “Reliable and accessible transit helps connect our residents to the region while making Hedley a more welcoming stop for those travelling through.”

The shelter is one of several transit infrastructure improvements supported through provincial funding programs and is intended to enhance the experience for residents using the Route 50 transit service.

The RDOS appreciates the Province of British Columbia’s investment in this community improvement and thanks residents for their patience while work is underway.
