Plaque unveiled honouring farm workers in Naramata
News ArticleINFORMATION RELEASE
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) is pleased to recognize the unveiling of a commemorative plaque honouring the contributions of farm workers in Electoral Area “E” (Naramata).
The permanent art installation, located in Manitou Park, was developed by the Naramata Community Fund Society in consultation with community members. The plaque pays tribute to the many farm workers, past, present, and future, who have helped shape the agricultural legacy of Naramata and the surrounding areas.
Since the 1930s, visiting workers from across Canada and around the world have supported the region’s fruit farming industry, contributing to its prosperity and growth. From 2008 to 2019, the Naramata Community Fund Society hosted an annual Farm Workers Dinner, welcoming hundreds of workers each summer with home-cooked meals and community spirit. These inclusive events fostered strong bonds between farm workers, farmers, and residents, and were made possible through the support of volunteers, local businesses, fruit growers, and the RDOS.
“The RDOS is proud to support initiatives that celebrate community heritage,” said Adrienne Fedrigo, Electoral Area “E” director. “It is important we honour the contributions of those who have helped build and sustain the region.”
The commemorative plaque was commissioned by the Naramata Community Fund. The plaque’s distinctive stand, designed to resemble a picker’s ladder, was conceptualized by Kristi Lind and Pat Wood, and skillfully crafted by Martin Dicken.
“Martin created a fabulous project and an eye-catching piece of installation art,” said Ann Richardson, a member of the Naramata Community Fund Society. “The Board so appreciated his time, energy and creativity.”
The RDOS would like to acknowledge the individuals and organizations who contributed to the success of this initiative, including:
- Pat Wood, Kristi Lind, and Jen Neilans, who organized the Farm Workers Dinners for over a decade
- Deb Linton, editor of MyNaramata, and Adrienne Fedrigo, Electoral Area “E” director for capturing the unveiling in photos
- Otto Flamenco and Justin Shuttleworth, RDOS staff
- Hansel Aluminum Products, Penticton Powder Coat, Keith Jones, and J.P. Roy for their support in constructing and installing the tribute
