Curbside Collection carts delivery update

News Article

INFORMATION RELEASE

The delivery of new curbside collection carts is expected to be completed by Friday, June 27. The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) would like to remind residents of the following:

  • The carts will be delivered to the curb or the end of a driveway.
  • Residents can use the carts as soon as they receive them.
  • Residents who have received their carts and want a change-out will be charged a $45 delivery fee.
  • The RDOS recommends that residents trial the carts delivered to them for a few months to determine whether a change-out is required.
  • The evaluation period for existing carts has passed, and those carts can no longer be evaluated.
  • Wondering what to do with your old garbage or recycling container? Consider repurposing them for storage, composting, or donating them to a neighbour or local business.
  • Old containers can also be used for unlimited yard waste collection days.
  • Residents cannot drop off unwanted carts or change-out carts at the RDOS main office, as there is no shipping/receiving area for carts. The carts are stored in an RDOS storage yard that is not open to the public.

Instructions
Roll the carts to the curb between 5:00 am and 7:00 am on the morning of your collection day, with the front of the cart facing the roadway. Make sure there is one (1) metre of space between carts and three (3) metres of clearance above. If you have not received your carts by Thursday, June 26, 2025, please contact the RDOS Solid Waste Hotline via email or telephone.

Details
Each home will automatically receive the standard-size carts unless a cart change-out was previously requested. The standard cart sizes are 120-litre garbage, 240-litre recycle, and 240-litre yard waste.

Not sure if the carts are the right size for you? Please try the carts for two months to see if they work for you before requesting a cart change-out. A $45 fee will apply for cart change-outs. Wondering what to do with your old garbage or recycling container? Consider repurposing them for storage, composting, or donating them to a neighbour or local business. Old containers can also be used for unlimited yard waste collection days.

Unlimited yard waste collection dates
Unlimited yard waste collection will occur a minimum of four (4) times per year in each Electoral Area. Exact dates and details can be found in your most recent collection calendar at rdos.bc.ca/curbside. During unlimited yard waste collection events, you can use paper yard waste bags, cans, stick bundles, or carts in addition to your RDOS yard waste cart. Garbage will continue to be collected weekly on your regular collection day, with recycling and yard waste alternating biweekly. Paper copies of the curbside calendars will be mailed with utility bills in July 2025.

Costs
Curbside collection costs have increased as a result of the new Waste Connections contract, which comes into effect July 1, 2025. Costs for curbside collection, including the cost of carts, can be found on page 18, Section 5 in the 2025 Fees and Charges bylaw under the Finance tab at rdos.bc.ca/regional-government/regional-bylaws. You can also view a summary document of the curbside collection costs available on rdosregionalconnections.ca.
