Naramata Emergency Support Services looking for volunteers

News Article

INFORMATION RELEASE

The Naramata Emergency Support Services (ESS) program is looking for new members. ESS volunteers support their communities during times of need and help preserve the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of those impacted by an emergency. ESS volunteers connect evacuees with temporary resources such as clothing, food, and shelter.

The Naramata ESS program is looking for volunteers who have a valid driver’s licence, reliable transportation, and are willing to respond to calls at all hours. ESS volunteers are empathetic, treat everyone with respect, and have strong communication skills. Volunteers also need to pass a criminal record check.

There are several ways you can support ESS:

Registration and Referrals

  • Help evacuees register with Emergency Management BC (EMBC)
  • Determine which services evacuees require
  • This role involves using a computer or tablet but does require extra training

Documentation

  • Help organize and manage records to ensure information is up-to-date

Greeter

  • First point of contact for evacuees at ESS reception centre
  • Help reassure evacuees and explain next steps in the process

Other roles

  • Child care, translation services, first aid, information technology

ESS training is provided at no cost to volunteers, and courses are offered online through the Justice Institute of BC (JIBC). Courses can be completed at your own pace and provide volunteers with the knowledge and skills they need to assist during times of need.

Call-outs can happen at any time, but volunteers will be trained to ensure they are comfortable with their role in advance of an emergency. The ESS team is welcoming and will ensure new volunteers have the tools and training required for success.
