Take Action on Radon – 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge
News ArticleINFORMATION RELEASE
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) is participating in the national 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge, a Health Canada-funded initiative led by Take Action on Radon, a coalition of national health organizations including the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (CARST) and the Canadian Cancer Society.
“The 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge is an opportunity for residents to learn more about an invisible health risk that can affect any home,” said Campbell Watt, RDOS vice-chair. “The RDOS is proud to support this initiative and encourage people to take a simple step that can provide peace of mind, protect their families, and help build a healthier community.”
As part of this initiative, 400 free radon test kits will be distributed to residents in Electoral Areas “B”, “D”, “E”, “G”, and “I”. The program aims to raise awareness about radon exposure and its link to lung cancer, particularly among non-smokers.
“Although Canadians are becoming more aware of radon and its link to lung cancer in non-smokers, we still see hesitancy before homeowners take steps to test and reduce their radon exposure,” said Pam Warkentin, executive director of CARST and project manager for Take Action on Radon. “Reducing radon exposure saves lives, and the 100 Test Kit Challenge is a great way for a community to come together and take action on radon.”
