Take Action on Radon – 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge

News Article

INFORMATION RELEASE

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) is participating in the national 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge, a Health Canada-funded initiative led by Take Action on Radon, a coalition of national health organizations including the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (CARST) and the Canadian Cancer Society.

“The RDOS is pleased to support the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge to help bring attention to the health risks associated with radon exposure,” said Mark Pendergraft, RDOS chair. “By participating in this national initiative, we’re empowering residents to take simple, proactive steps to protect their health and contribute to a safer, healthier region.”

As part of this initiative, 200 free radon test kits will be distributed to residents in Electoral Areas “A”, “C”, “F”, and “H”, as well as the Town of Osoyoos and City of Penticton. The program aims to raise awareness about radon exposure and its link to lung cancer, particularly among non-smokers.

“Although Canadians are becoming more aware of radon and its link to lung cancer in non-smokers, we still see hesitancy before homeowners take steps to test and reduce their radon exposure,” said Pam Warkentin, executive director of CARST and project manager for Take Action on Radon. “Reducing radon exposure saves lives, and the 100 Test Kit Challenge is a great way for a community to come together and take action on radon.”
