RDOS to install speed reader boards at key school zones

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) and School District No. 67 (Okanagan Skaha) are announcing the installation of electronic speed reader boards in several communities, including key school zones. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to improving pedestrian safety and encouraging responsible driving behaviour. Funding for the project is provided in part through the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) Road Improvement Program, with the remaining costs funded by RDOS.
Traffic control personnel will be on location during installations due to temporary impacts on traffic flow. Motorists may experience minor delays and are asked to follow posted signage and directions. Installation is scheduled to begin Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
“The installation of the speed reader boards can help reduce speeds and improve pedestrian safety,” said Mark Pendergraft, RDOS chair. “The boards are intended to encourage drivers to be aware of the posted speed limit and adjust their driving behaviour.”
Speed reader boards will be installed in the following areas:
- Naramata (Electoral Area “E”)
- West Bench (Electoral Area “F”)
- Kaleden (Electoral Area “I”)
“We are pleased to see the installation of speed reader boards in school zones for Kaleden Elementary, Naramata Elementary and West Bench Elementary,” said James Palanio, Board of Education Chair. “These critical additions help remind drivers to slow down and prioritize student safety. By working together, we ensure that every child can travel to and from school safely.”
Additional speed reader installations are planned and budgeted for Okanagan Falls (Electoral Area “D”) and Hedley (Electoral Area “G”), with timelines subject to the required approvals.
