Wharf Park expansion project

News Article

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) is continuing work on the expansion of Wharf Park in Electoral Area “E” (Naramata). The project is located along 1st Street, between Anna Avenue and 3rd Street.

Demolition of the concrete slab is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, and work is anticipated to be completed in November 2023. Park users are asked to use street parking as the concrete slab area will no longer be available for vehicle parking. Removal of the concrete slab, which was the floor of the old packinghouse building, is necessary to prepare for the next phase of construction. Detailed landscape design work is also underway and will inform upcoming earthwork, irrigation planting and hardscape construction.

The demolition of portions of 1st and 3rd Streets, along with the realignment of 3rd Street, is now complete. Overhead and subsurface utilities have been relocated as part of the spring/summer scope of work. The affected portion of 1st Street is permanently closed to vehicle traffic, and the entire project site, excluding the existing park/wharf area, remains temporarily closed to pedestrian traffic for safety reasons. The newly realigned 3rd Street is once again open to traffic.

Project Background
Wharf Park, established at the site of an old CPR train dock, is a popular lakefront amenity in Electoral Area “E” (Naramata). It is one of three public beachfront parks in the community. In 2016, the RDOS acquired adjacent properties in order to expand Wharf Park. The acquired properties include the site of an old packinghouse building on the north side of 1st Street and the site of the former Country Squire restaurant on the south side of 1st Street. The intent of the project is to unify and upgrade the parcels of RDOS parkland and to expand this community amenity.
