Trail kiosks highlight rail history and biodiversity

News Article

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) recently installed five interpretive kiosks at strategic trailhead locations throughout the region. The kiosks are intended to highlight the extensive trail network and unique biodiversity in the region. The kiosks will soon be outfitted with regional trail mapping, trail etiquette and historical references, and local biodiversity information.

“These distinctive kiosks reflect the trains that once travelled throughout the interior,” says RDOS Chair Mark Pendergraft. “This rail history and the rail beds that remain, are important reasons why these trails exist to this day.”

The installed kiosks were built by Vernon-based European Timberframe Corp., with support from Rec Sites and Trails BC.

Kiosk locations:

  • Chute Lake (Electoral Area E)
  • Okanagan Falls Trestle (Electoral Area D)
  • McAlpine Bridge – Tuc-el-Nuit (Electoral Area C)
  • Similkameen Rail Trail – Cawston (Electoral Area B)
  • Road 21 (Electoral Area C)
