Campfires permitted within five RDOS Fire Service Areas

News Article

Effective at noon on Friday, September 10, 2021, campfires will be permitted throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre. This area includes the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) Fire Protection Area (Naramata, Kaleden, Willowbrook, Okanagan Falls and Anarchist Mountain).

Fire Departments within the five RDOS Fire Protection Areas did not issue a campfire ban prior to the provincial prohibition issued on June 30, 2021. “Fire Chiefs will abide by the provincial recommendation and continue to monitor conditions,” says RDOS Fire Chiefs Association President Denis Gaudry. “Residents and visitors are asked to remain vigilant to help prevent wildfires.” A local campfire ban within the five RDOS Fire Protection Areas could still be issued if required.

BC Wildfire Service Information Bulletin

“Although fire danger ratings have declined in the region due to recent rainfall and cooler temperatures, the public is strongly encouraged to continue exercising extreme caution with any campfire use. It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that burning is done in a safe and responsible manner and in accordance with regulations. Before lighting any fire, check with local government authorities to see if any local burning restrictions are in place.

While campfires will be allowed, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited, which includes the use of fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels and burn cages. These restrictions will remain in place until October 15, 2021, or until the order is rescinded.”
